A More Direct Kind of Couples Work
Many couples have been through therapy that felt polite but changed nothing. Relational Life Therapy was built for that frustration. Rather than remaining strictly neutral, the RLT therapist is transparent about what they see, including the specific ways each partner moves into one-up grandiosity or one-down shame when the relationship feels threatened.
That honesty is in service of the relationship, not against either partner. Naming the losing strategies clearly, such as needing to be right, controlling your partner, unbridled self-expression, retaliation, and withdrawal, is often the first time a couple has heard their dynamic described accurately.
From Adaptive Child to Wise Adult
RLT works with the idea that under stress, each partner responds from an adaptive child stance, the protective posture learned early in life, rather than from the wise adult who can hold both self-respect and care for the other. Therapy helps each person recognize the shift as it happens and practise responding from the more resourced position.
The work is skills-based as well as insight-based. Partners learn how to raise a complaint without contempt, how to listen without collapsing or counterattacking, and how to repair in a way that actually lands.
How It Is Used at KDW
RLT at KDW is integrated with attachment-informed and trauma-informed care. The directness of the model is paired with careful attention to each partner's history and nervous system, so honesty never becomes harshness.
The clinical evidence base
Relational Life Therapy draws on established foundations in family systems, attachment theory, and trauma research. Developed by Terrence Real, it is practised internationally and is increasingly studied for its outcomes in improving intimacy, accountability, and relational repair.
What sessions actually look like
Sessions are candid and active. The therapist will name the dynamic they see directly, work with each partner's protective stance, and teach concrete relational skills that are practised in session and at home.
Who benefits most
RLT suits couples who want a therapist who will be straight with them, particularly where entrenched patterns of control, defensiveness, contempt, or withdrawal have resisted gentler approaches.
