What Sex Therapy Helps With
Sexual concerns are common. Most people carry them for years before saying anything, because the words feel awkward or shameful.
You do not need a diagnosis to book. If it matters to you, it matters here.
We work with concerns like:
- Different levels of desire between partners
- Anxiety that gets in the way of arousal
- Pain or physical difficulty during sex
- Feeling disconnected from a partner
- Shame about past sexual experiences
- Questions about sexual identity or orientation
- Sex after trauma, illness, birth, or menopause
- Porn use, compulsive patterns, or mismatched expectations
Staying silent usually makes it worse. A partner reads avoidance as rejection. Pressure replaces curiosity. Soon neither person can raise the topic at all.
How Sex Therapy Works
Sex therapy is a specialized kind of talk therapy. It is a conversation, nothing more.
Here is what that means in practice:
- No physical contact and no physical exam
- No pressure to share details you do not want to share
- Focus on what is happening, how it affects you, and why it keeps happening
The work looks different depending on who is in the room.
If you come as a couple
We help you talk about desire and boundaries without the talk turning into a fight. Most couples have never had a safe script for this conversation.
If you come on your own
We look at anxiety, shame, body image, past experiences, and the beliefs about sex you grew up with. You do not need a partner to start.
What Your First Sessions Look Like
The first two or three sessions are about getting clear. Your therapist will ask what the concern is, how long it has been there, and what you want to change.
From there, the path depends on what you need:
- Some clients want accurate information and practical exercises to try at home.
- Others need slower work on trauma or relationship patterns first.
- Many need both, in that order.
Your therapist will explain the reason behind every suggestion. Nothing is a mystery, and nothing is forced.
When a Doctor Needs to Be Involved
Sexual concerns often have a physical side. Health conditions, medication, stress, and hormones all play a role.
If we think a medical issue is driving the problem, we will say so. Then we point you toward the right care. We will not treat a physical problem as if it were only in your head.
Sex therapy can run alongside medical treatment. Many clients do both at once.
Who You Would See
Sex therapy at KDW is provided by Amanda Topping, MSW, RSW, a certified sex therapist. She works with individuals and couples across all orientations and relationship structures.
Sessions are available in person at our London office on Springbank Drive, or by secure video anywhere in Ontario.
How to Start
Book a free 15-minute consultation. You can describe the concern in general terms. You do not need to share details on that first call.
The consultation answers three questions:
- Does your concern fit our scope?
- What would a first session involve?
- Does this therapist feel like the right fit?
Nothing is committed to on that call.
