Key Takeaway
At KDW Counselling & Consulting in London, Ontario, couples counselling costs $140 to $165 per hour, depending on the therapist you see, with 60-minute and 90-minute sessions available and a free 15-minute consultation before you commit. Many extended health plans reimburse sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker, and the Canada Revenue Agency lists both professions as authorized medical practitioners in Ontario for the medical expense tax credit. A sliding scale is available for couples without coverage or with financial limits.Couples counselling at KDW Counselling & Consulting in London, Ontario costs $140 to $165 per hour, depending on which therapist you work with. What you actually pay out of pocket depends on three more things: how long your sessions are, whether your extended health plan reimburses the therapist's designation, and how many sessions the two of you need.
Cost is one of the first questions couples ask, and often the one they feel awkward raising. It is a reasonable question. Knowing the numbers before you start means money is one less thing to argue about once you are in the room.
What You Pay Per Session
Our current couples rate is $140 to $165 per hour, depending on the provider. Every clinician on our team is regulated, either by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
Sessions are offered in two lengths:
- 60 minutes, the usual rhythm for ongoing couples work
- 90 minutes, which some couples prefer at the start, or when a conversation needs more room than an hour allows
Rates are quoted per hour, so ask during your consultation what a 90-minute session costs with the therapist you are considering. Our fees page lists the current rates, payment methods and cancellation policy in one place.
What Shapes the Total Cost
The hourly rate is only part of the picture. The total depends on:
- How often you meet. Many couples start weekly or every other week, then space sessions out as things settle.
- What you are working on. A recurring argument about chores is different work from repairing trust after an affair. Your therapist can give you a sense of pacing once they understand what brought you in.
- Whether both partners attend. Couples work usually happens together, though some sessions may be individual. If one partner is not ready to come, our post on what to do when one partner won't come to couples therapy covers the options.
We do not promise a set number of sessions, because no honest therapist can. What we can do is check in regularly about whether the work is helping and whether the pace still makes sense for your budget.

Does Insurance Cover Couples Counselling?
Often, at least in part. We provide receipts for extended health and insurance reimbursement after each session. Whether your plan pays, and how much, depends on the plan itself.
Before you book, it is worth asking your insurer three questions:
1. Which designations does my plan cover? Some plans reimburse Registered Psychotherapists (RP), some reimburse Registered Social Workers (RSW), and many cover both. Coverage for RPs and RSWs varies from plan to plan. 2. What is my annual maximum, and is there a per-session cap? Some plans pay a set percentage up to a yearly limit. 3. Whose plan should the receipt go under? If both partners have coverage, ask how couples sessions should be submitted.
You can then choose a therapist whose designation your plan recognises. We are happy to tell you each clinician's designation before you book.
The Medical Expense Tax Credit
Therapy costs that insurance does not reimburse may still help at tax time. The Canada Revenue Agency's list of authorized medical practitioners for the medical expense tax credit marks registered psychotherapists and social workers as authorized in Ontario. Keep your receipts, and check with the CRA or a tax professional about how the credit applies to your own situation.
If the Cost Is a Barrier
Money worries should not be the reason a couple goes without support. We offer a sliding scale for clients without insurance coverage or with financial limitations. Raise it during your free consultation and we will look for a rate that works.
Other ways to keep costs manageable:
- Book virtual sessions if travel time or childcare adds to the cost. We see couples by secure video anywhere in Ontario through our virtual therapy service.
- Space sessions out once the most urgent work is done, rather than stopping altogether.
- Use the time between sessions. Trying what you discussed at home helps you get more out of each hour in the room.

Questions to Ask Before You Book
Use the free 15-minute consultation to ask about money as directly as you would ask about approach:
- What is your hourly rate, and what does a 90-minute session cost?
- What is your designation, so I can check it against my insurance?
- Do you offer a sliding scale?
- What is your cancellation policy?
