Key Takeaway
There is no practical difference between marriage counselling and couples therapy in Ontario: both describe a regulated therapist working with two partners on the patterns between them, and you do not need to be married to book either one. "Marriage counselling" is the older, more familiar name, while "couples therapy" reflects that the same work serves dating, engaged, common-law and married partners alike. The choices that actually matter are whether the counsellor is a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker, whether they are trained in a couples approach such as the Gottman Method or Relational Life Therapy, and whether you start before the pattern has hardened. There is no real difference between marriage counselling and couples therapy in Ontario: both names describe a regulated therapist working with two partners on what keeps going wrong between them, and you do not need to be married for either. The more useful questions are who the counsellor is, how they are trained to work with couples, and whether you start soon enough.
People search both terms, and practices use them interchangeably, so it is easy to wonder whether you are choosing between two different services. You are not. You are choosing a person and an approach.
Why There Are Two Names
"Marriage counselling" is the older phrase, from a time when most couples who sought help were married. "Couples therapy" came into wider use as more partners lived together without marrying, and as the work itself was recognised as the same regardless of legal status.
At KDW Counselling, our service is called couples and marriage counselling precisely because both names point to the same work. Sessions look the same whether you have been married for twenty years or moved in together last spring.
You Do Not Need to Be Married
Couples therapy is open to partners who are:
- Dating, engaged or common-law
- Married, separated or considering separation
What makes it couples work is that the focus is the relationship, the pattern between the two of you, rather than either person alone.

What Actually Differs: The Counsellor and the Approach
Since the label tells you little, look at these instead.
Registration. In Ontario, psychotherapy is a regulated health profession. Look for a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, or a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Both colleges keep a public register you can search by name. "Marriage counsellor" on its own is not a protected title, so it tells you nothing about training or accountability.
Couples training. Working with two people at once is its own skill. Ask which couples approach a therapist uses. At KDW, our couples clinicians draw on the Gottman Method, a structured approach focused on friendship, conflict and shared meaning, and Relational Life Therapy, a more direct approach that names the patterns keeping a couple stuck.
Fit. Both partners need to feel the therapist is not taking a side against them. A free consultation is the easiest way to test that before you commit.
Our guide on choosing a couples counsellor in London, Ontario walks through these checks in more detail, including red flags.
When to Start
The most common mistake is not choosing the wrong name. It is waiting. In an article published by The Gottman Institute, therapist Terry Gaspard writes that, according to Dr. John Gottman, "couples wait an average of six years of being unhappy before getting help." By then, the same argument has often been rehearsed many times and both partners have grown more guarded.
It is worth reaching out when:
- The same conflict keeps returning, however it starts
- One or both of you has started to withdraw rather than raise things
- A major change, such as a new baby, a move or a job loss, has knocked you off balance
- Trust has been broken, through an affair or something else; our infidelity and trust repair counselling focuses on this
You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need to have decided whether to stay together. Many couples come precisely because they want to understand what is happening before they decide anything.
If abuse, coercive control or an immediate safety concern is part of the relationship, standard couples therapy is not the right starting point. We will say so directly and help you find safer support. If you are in crisis, call or text 9-8-8.

Do we both have to come? Couples work is usually joint, but it can begin with one partner. Our post on what to do when one partner won't come to couples therapy covers that situation.
